Advertencia: Tsunami Como Terremoto De Magnitud 7 Golpea Las Islas Salomón

On Tuesday afternoon, a powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred near the Solomon Islands. This triggered a tsunami warning for nearby islands.

There are no immediate reports of injuries or widespread damage.

Charley Piringi, a freelance journalist, said he was standing outside a warehouse near a primary and secondary school, on the outskirts of Honiara’s capital, Honiara, when the quake struck. The children ran.

He said: “The earthquake shook this place.” It was a massive one. “We were all stunned, and everyone was running everywhere.”

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the ocean approximately 35 miles (56 km) southwest of Honiara at a depth of 8 miles (13 kilometers).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center indicated that dangerous waves could occur for the islands of the region. However, he warned that there is no major tsunami threat.

According to the center, the waves could reach up to 1 meter (3 feet) higher than the tidal level in the Solomon Islands. Waves may also be generated for Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea.

The Solomon Islands are located in the Pacific Ring of Fire. This arc runs along the edge of the Pacific Ocean and is where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
